Fish and Chips on a diet? Yes!

Fish and Chips - Syn free
Fish and Chips – Syn free

One of the UK’s favourite takeaways, Fish and Chips are a national treasure. Originally something we took from a Portuguese idea, they have become commonplace on every high street across the country – but the shop itself can originally be traced to Oldham.

The typical takeaway, however, is cooked in oil and coupled with the batter this can push the typical takeaway up to 30 syns. Slimming World’s simple menu option brings the classic within your free allowance – this simple recipe means you can have your Fish, Chips, and Mushy peas – without spending a single syn in the process!

Simply get some fish fillets (cod is what we used – from the frozen section at Tesco). Add some salt and pepper if you’d like and then cook in the oven as per the instructions.

Note: If you’d like a ‘crispy version’, you can make some breadcrumbs from your Healthy Extra B bread choice (blitz this in a blender, and then dip the fish in egg wash beforehand – then roll in the breadcrumbs to give it a crispy texture)

With the chips – well, a Slimming World favourite is Syn Free Chips! Simply chop a few potatoes and then par-boil them for 10 minutes, then dry and return to the pan.

Put the lid on top of the pan and gently ‘shake’ the pan to allow the chips to fluff up at the ends – and then season, add some fry light and cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes at 200’c.

And for the peas? Well you have a choice with Extra Easy – I had mushy peas (a full tin! yum!) and my partner opted for garden peas. Whichever is your favourite way – they’re both free on Slimming World so you can enjoy them as you like.

So there is a simple meal – Fish and Chips – but without the high syn price! Enjoy!
