Being a consultant: Initial Training
Being a consultant with Slimming World is something totally different to any job you’ve had before. Today is the last day in my normal ‘full-time’ job working at a University, and going forward, I’ll be working in a different role local to Manchester which means I can spend less time commuting, and more time with friends, family and ultimately, supporting my lovely members.
When you join Slimming World as a member, there’s a small note inside your member packs about becoming a consultant at a later time. It’s probably not the right time when you join, but it’s there as a reminder for later on that you could help people just like I do.
When I joined as a member back in 2007, I didn’t think anything about being a consultant – indeed it was laughable at the time as with being a man, it’s a bit of an odd thing to be a consultant for a weight loss company, and it wasn’t something I thought I could ever do. But after losing 4 1/2 stones in that first year, a fellow member said that I’d be great as a consultant, and we both went along to find out more at a ‘opportunities event’. It did seem really good, and we’d signed up, ready for training in December that year.
I was blown away with the initial training (with was over a weekend) at Slimming World Head Office in Derbyshire, everyone was so lovely and friendly, there was so much support, and the team were brilliant. I met some great friends too on that event, whom I keep in contact with. And then you’re ready to open your first group with a lovely bunch of members eager to find out about our plan, and lose weight with us.
There’s not many roles where you can find such a warming and friendly environment, where people are supporting you along the way, and providing a service which cannot be beaten. This role which was initially just one night a week has expanded with the success, and now I look after 3 lovely groups in addition to my full time role. And it’s becoming so busy, my full-time role has had to adapt, and now I can spend more time with my groups, my members, my friends.
