EasiYo – Yogurt Maker

easiyo-slimming-worldWe’ve been looking at ideas for low-Syn yogurt options for a good few weeks as we try to find alternatives to one or two which seem to keep rising in prices or have a complex special offer every other week (It’s like a furniture store sale sometimes). A follower on Twitter recommended that we try EasiYo – and of course, we jumped at the opportunity.

EasiYo is a company from New Zealand and the principle is that you make the yogurt yourself – basically setup the large container with hot water, add your smaller container with the EasiYo sachet and cold water, immerse in the water, and leave for 8-12 hours. The result? Yogurt.

How does it work?

The thing to understand is that there’s no machinery in the background, or any moving parts within the large container, and it’s odd to think what’s happening. The basics is that in order to grow, lactic cultures need heat, and a source of milk sugar on which to feed. That sounds scary, but it’s the basis of all yogurts out there, they all start out the same way.

Ideally, the yogurt needs to reach 40-50*c in order to grow, and this is why hot water is needed. There’s a small plastic instrument inside the large container which is called the ‘baffle’ and this controls the heat inside to allow the system to generate the yogurt over time. The sachet mix has dried cultures which reactivate and divide in the heat based conditions of the EasiYo Yogurt Maker.
